Question 2- Comprehension (15)

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.

Setting up his wares under a large, shady banyan tree, the astrologer sat to business. A chart of the position of the stars and the planets was set at his feet along with a flask of ‘holy’ rose water and a broom made of peacock feathers. A set of 3 incense sticks was perennially lit to provide him with the mystic atmosphere. He was dressed in a black kurta and dhoti with an orange turban. He had plastered ash on his face and three long lines of red powder were drawn on his forehead.

He often mused at how foolish people were to pay money to someone to know their future. There was nothing like being able to predict future. Destiny was its own mistress. Nobody could control their future even if they knew about it. But yet people thought that the celestial elements like stars and planets would know of their fortune and desperately wanted to know about it.

Of course, the astrologer would only pretend to study the charts and see into their future, pausing at the right moments for it to take effect while really, he was studying the person in front of him. He could predict much about his client by studying their body language. A person who wouldn’t sit still and constantly fidget meant that he would remain indecisive for his entire life. By studying their posture, he would predict their future.

After his day was over, he was about to pack up and leave when a stranger appeared before him. The man handed him a gold coin and asked him to predict his future. The astrologer realized that it was dark and studying this man might be difficult so he politely refused. The man urged him and told him that if he would predict his future, he would pay the astrologer 10 gold coins. The astrologer lifted the lamp to see this man clearly. His face was thick with worry lines and a long scar extended from his eyebrow to his chin.

The astrologer agreed. He told the man that he had, in the past, fought and won many battles. And more wars were to come. He would conquer many lands. A lot of people would serve him. He talked about the man’s bravery and generosity. The man, pleased with the astrologer, awarded him the coins and left. The astrologer too, packed up and left.

Upon reaching home, he took a quick bath and sat for supper. His wife served him the meal and asked him about the day. The astrologer then said, “Remember the rumour that the King would often dress as a commoner and roam the streets? It is true. He came by to know his future.”

His wife gasped. She asked him what had he done. He replied, “I recognized him by his battle scar. I told him what he wanted to hear. And look, here we are, richer by 10 gold coins”.
